Kairos
Outside is an ecumenical ministry for women who have been
affected by the imprisonment of a loved one, where they can
learn how to cope with the incarceration.
The
Kairos Outside weekend is a Christian-based approach to
healing for women with a loved one in prison but women of all
faiths are welcome. Kairos Outside is specially designed to
create a sacred and safe environment for these women, who
often feel hopeless, isolated and alone.
The
weekend is based on a series of talks by women who have an
imprisoned loved one. The talks are interspersed with periods
of sharing by the participants, many of whom are start to see
that they are not alone in their experience, as well as
structured periods of prayer and meditation.
Jo Chapman founded Kairos Outside.
She and her husband Tom were regular volunteers at San Quentin
Prison, leading Kairos Inside, a workshop in Christian faith
for the male prisoners there. Chapman got the idea for Kairos
Outside when the prison chaplain mentioned how much he thought
that the families of prisoners needed a spiritual support
community of their own.
In the last 10 years, over 1000
women have participated in Kairos Outside workshops, which now
take place in 15 states and abroad.

Purpose |
|
KAIROS
OUTSIDE is designed to support the wives
and mothers of men who are incarcerated.
This is done by providing a safe
environment for a short time with
Christian people and the opportunity to
interact with women in similar situations.
We believe that the wives and mothers of
the incarcerated are "doing
time" right along with their loved
ones. We want to let them know that there
is a Christian community who cares about
them and their needs. |

What
Happens at a Kairos Outside Weekend? |
|
The
weekend is a series of talks by women
sharing their life journey. Each
participant has the opportunity to
review the talk in small groups.
However, sharing in the small group is
voluntary. The program is interspersed
with music, prayer, fun activites and
general pampering. We expect the women
in attendance to stay for the entire
program. The weekend is Christian in
nature, although no religious
affiliation is necessary to attend. |
|
Why
should I give up a weekend visit
with my husband to come to Kairos
Outside? |
|
The
journey as a wife or mother of an
inmate is difficult. Many of the
peolpe in the outside world do not
understand your position and may
even reject you. This weekend is
designed to give you support from
women who are in the same
situation and from other Christian
people who care about you and the
men inside. |
